Leipzig - Chemnitz railway: southern section will be twice as expensive

Deutsche Bahn assumes twice as high costs for the expansion of the southern section of the Leipzig - Chemnitz railway line. The total cost could now be 600 million euros.
The expansion of the southern section of the Leipzig-Chemnitz railway is expected to be twice as expensive as previously planned. Deutsche Bahn (DB) said it now expects a total cost of 600 million euros. This is due, among other things, to general price increases and higher planning costs. According to DB, it originally planned 306 million euros.
Expansion is to begin in 2032 The route between Chemnitz and Geithain is to be doubled and electrified in large parts. The approval documents for the first section are held by the Federal Railway Authority. The work is to start in 2032 and will take two years. Work continued on the northern section between Geithain and Leipzig.
For this route, the railway assumes a total cost of more than 1.3 billion euros. The company also assumed lower costs for this section, with an initial budget of 500 million euros. MDR (phb)
