In the Saale district, the fire brigade is deployed in the event of a major fire in a warehouse. According to the police, the fire broke out on Thursday in the late afternoon near the Lochau landfill. The smoke was visible as far as Halle and Leipzig. From MDR SAXONY-ANHALT In the Saale district, the fire brigade will continue to be deployed in a major fire late Thursday evening.
A spokeswoman for the police in Halle told MDR SAXONY-ANHALT that the fire broke out around 5 p.m. at a company near the Lochau landfill. According to current information, this is a warehouse in the Schkopau district of Döllnitz. The police have not given any further details so far. Smoke from fire can also be seen in Halle and Leipzig According to MDR information, the smoke plumes could be seen as far as Halle and Leipzig in the early evening of Thursday.
A warning message currently applies to surrounding places: The smoke could cause odour nuisance. Residents should keep windows and doors closed, turn off air conditioning and ventilation, and avoid the affected area. According to another warning, places in Saxony are also affected. The landfill is located southeast of Halle between the villages of Dieskau, Döllnitz and Lochau.
According to its own information, the company was established in 1976 in the remaining hole of a former opencast lignite mine. From 1976 to 2005, the dump was a large domestic waste landfill. Around 18 million tonnes of waste were deposited there. Today, the old landfill is secured and recultivated.
Among other things, leachate and climate-damaging landfill gas are controlled – some of the gas is used to generate energy. Leipzig/Halle Airport: No restrictions due to smoke The fire site is located in the entrance lane of Leipzig/Halle Airport. Citizens told MDR SAXONY-ANHALT that planes apparently had to fly a bow when landing because of the smoke. A spokesman for the airport said air traffic was not restricted.
Aircraft would have different approach options and could fly through clouds of smoke without any problems. Fires on the ground therefore normally have no effect on the airspace. The cause of the fire is still unclear. According to MDR information, there are no injuries. Transparency note: An earlier version of this article stated that the fire had broken out in the landfill.
According to the current state of knowledge, this is the warehouse of a disposal company near the landfill. MDR (Anja Walczak, Maren Wilczek, Norma Düsekow), dpa
