As the Trier police headquarters announced, more than 1,000 people had arranged an illegal tuning meeting in the Wittlich-Wengerohr industrial estate during the night on Sunday. The police estimate that about 300 to 400 vehicles were on the site or in the immediate vicinity. Videos on social media show cars drifting through a crowd at high speed and firecrackers being ignited.
Assault on patrol cars – police must retreat
When the first police officers drove to the company premises, they were threatened, according to the police headquarters. A group of masked men approached the officers, partly igniting pyrotechnics and also damaging a patrol car through kicks and blows.
The emergency services could not have gotten out. To protect themselves, they would have withdrawn. According to the police headquarters, the main task was to document the participants and the events.
Damage to property, fireworks and drifts at tuning meetings
According to police information, participants damaged lighting equipment, company vehicles on the premises as well as barriers on neighboring company premises. In addition, they lit rubbish bins, burned fireworks several times and carried out so-called "drifts" with vehicles. In addition, people walked over the roof of a company building and over parked trucks.
Damage on company premises – investigations into numerous offences
Vehicles and lighting on the company premises have broken down. People had entered buses, emptied fire extinguishers and damaged trucks. According to the police, the spook ended at three o'clock in the night - the meeting had "coordinated and dissolved almost simultaneously". The company concerned did not know anything about all this in advance and did not agree to it.
What do tuning and drifting mean?
Vehicle tuning
Vehicle tuning refers to a wide variety of structural measures that can change the appearance, acoustics or performance of the vehicle. However, many changes must be checked and approved for roadworthiness. These include changes to the rims, suspension and aerodynamic components.
Drifting
When drifting, a vehicle is deliberately oversteered while maintaining a high cornering speed. Drift itself does not constitute an administrative offence, but fines may be imposed in connection with other violations of the law. This includes violations such as unnecessary noise when using the vehicle, avoidable exhaust nuisance, property damage and the violation of the right-hand driving requirement in the corner.
Helicopter and drone in use
Police deployed officers from surrounding stations and the riot police to Wittlich and set up checkpoints. These were intended to check departing participants and prevent further arrivals. The operation was supported by a police helicopter, a county drone for aerial situation assessment, and firefighters.
