Water City: Congress for water experts in Hamburg
Published September 28, 2026

What can the future look like in a city like Hamburg that is affected by climate change? Since Monday, 500 experts have been conferring on this.
Alster, Elbe and Bille: Hamburg is a city with many waters. What possibilities this offers is what a conference in the Oberhafenquartier has been about since Monday. There are around 500 experts in attendance. The participants of the conference come from New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Amsterdam, London or Copenhagen and work in urban planning, architecture offices or administration.
At the meeting in Hamburg, the experts want to talk about their experiences and visions: how banks, quays and public water areas could be used creatively, how new apartments could be built or how industrial companies could be set up. Water in a world under the sign of climate change "Of course, it is also about the question of what role water plays in a phase where everyone not only talks about climate change, but also feels it," said Senior Construction Director Franz-Josef Höing at the opening of the conference on Monday evening, which was also attended by Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD). The event was organised by the city development authority. On Monday, there were already several guided tours for those interested, including one to the new Grasbrook district, where 6,000 people are supposed to live.
