The Nuremberg Ice Tigers defeated the Eagles Mannheim 5:3 (1: 2, 2: 0, 2: 1) on the third matchday of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). Both teams delivered a wild exchange of blows to the spectators - with the better end for the strong-willed hosts.
The founding members of the DEL already met for the 166th Sometimes on top of each other - there was no duel more often. Nuremberg received the eagles with the tailwind of the two opening victories against Augsburg and Ingolstadt. The Ice Tigers showed confidence. After only 50 seconds, Austin Magera refined a wonderful attack to 1-0. The guests reacted only briefly in shock and built up pressure.
Initially, Nuremberg keeper Niklas Treutle defused two more chances, but then he could not hold a shot - Alexander Ehl was on the spot and marked the equaliser (6th minute). Mannheim continued to look for the way forward, having already fired seven shots on goal after seven minutes. But Justin Schütz put the puck free-standing over the goal. After that, it was sometimes hot on the ice, the game was contested.
With a curious hit, the eagles turned the game. Nuremberg's Evan Barratt was put under pressure in front of Max Calce's own goal. Barratt's cross-pass was steered into goal with a trowel by the only 17-year-old Mannheimer. Keeper Treutle was too surprised to be able to react. After 15 minutes, the Ice Tigers outnumbered each other for the first time, quickly getting into the line-up and finishing, but failed to score.
Spezia refines Barratt's great pass
Mannheim started with one more man on the ice in the second 20 minutes, because Ryan Jones had received a two-minute penalty before the third break. Schütz fired towards the end of the majority, but only hit the crossbar. On the other hand, Josef Eham forced keeper Jake Hildebrand to parade with his undercover endings.
Then Adler veteran Matthias Plachta picked up a two-plus-two penalty for high sticks, so Nuremberg remained outnumbered for four minutes to equalise. The Ice Tigers immediately made a lot of pressure and came up with big chances. But Hildebrand parried brilliantly several times. seconds after the eagles were full again, it was then where to go: Tyler Spezia scored after a great pass from Barratt to 2:2.
Both teams continued to look for the way into the offensive, so a fast-paced exchange of battles developed. Half a minute before the intermission, the Nuremberg team came to the next overpopulation situation. And the Ice Tigers were back on the scene: Thomas Heigl angled the puck and stumbled into the right angle (40th) a second and a half before the siren.
Dove-McFalls puts the lid on
Because Kris Bennett had also received a two-plus-two penalty, the Nuremberg team continued to outnumber each other in the final period - but this time without the big chances. Subsequently, the eagles pressed for compensation. Top talent Calce was served in the neutral zone of Ehl and moved irresistibly to the goal and remained ice-cold against Treutle - 3:3 (47th).
Only 26 seconds later, the Nurembergers countered again. Spezia was free on the left side and left Hildebrand no chance. 90 seconds before the end, Julius Karrer had to sit on the bench for two minutes, Mannheim had taken the keeper off the ice and was outnumbered by two men for a few moments. Then Patrick Brown picked up two minutes and the double advantage was gone. In the remaining time, the guests could no longer settle, instead Samuel Dove-McFalls provided the Empty Net Goal for the decision. For Nuremberg, the game will continue on Friday at the Löwen Frankfurt (7:30 pm). At the same time, the eagles meet the Krefeld penguins.
